Penzance Youth Market

 About Penzance Youth Market:

Penzance Youth Market is a home-grown project which aims to support young entrepreneurs in Penzance and West Cornwall to benefit from the real-life experience of running their own businesses. There are three markets per year (Spring, Golowan and Christmas) that afford young people the chance to create a small business of their own, make money and learn skills such as market research, planning, budgets, marketing, and selling their goods or services.  With a performance stage too, the markets are lively and fun and enable young performers to hone their musical, performance and business skills.

What did STAND FOR do for Penzance Youth Market?

Neil Tregarthen of Stand For came to speak to the young entrepreneurs and inspired them with his story of leaving Penzance as a young man with just £100 in his pocket and a determination to succeed, and how he worked hard over many years to build a very profitable global business. He validated their courage in standing out from the crowd by setting up their own small businesses through Penzance Youth Market and also supported the project with a vitally important donation.

What was the outcome?

Stand For supported Penzance Youth Market with a £1000 donation when the project was in limbo between its first “pilot” years and waiting to hear if a grant for the future was available from the National Lottery. Neil enthused the participants through his emphasis on self-belief and responding to a personal challenge and provided some ad hoc incentives for the best market stall presentation.

Describe what STAND FOR means to you?

“Stand For’s donation was essential to us surviving in a short period where the project could have collapsed,” said Emma Wilson, Project Coordinator. “We needed someone like Neil with his understanding of the value of supporting young entrepreneurs, to bail us out, which he did.”
